The Parent Leadership Training Institute of Alexandria
"Democracy Includes Everyone... [PLTI] of Alexandria seeks to enable parents to become leading advocates for children."
"We are out in the community looking for parents who are advocating for their children…parents see the issues that are impacting their children, and a lot of times they’re frustrated. It doesn’t matter what level of education you have or background or training, when you want to do what's best for your children you want to learn how to work with the people who are making the decisions that impact their lives. So we introduce them to those decision makers, we give them the tools, we help them understand... If it’s a city council decision, how are these budgets being made, where are the decisions coming from, who are the people making the decisions, and how do you lend your voice to the way that they are making the decisions that are impacting your family and your children.
The program is free for all of our participants... you go through an interview process, and then you have to show up every Friday night for about 20 weeks, but you’re allowed to bring your children with you. We start with dinner, so the parents and the families get to have dinner together, and then the parents go up for PLTI but the children stay down for CLTI. So not only do they get to see their parents stepping into the role of leader and advocate and policy maker, but they also are learning the same civics and advocacy skills that their parents are learning. So what we’re seeing, is two generations coming together to engage in the process of the way that we as a community build community, and make life better for children…The children are beginning to advocate for themselves as they see their parents stepping into these leadership roles as well."
