PLEASE NOTE: The Alexandria People's Assembly is a space of robust community care and concern. The site is wheelchair-accessible and clearly identified. Our “Don’t Bring It In and Don’t Take It Home!” proactive preventative health and safety measures will be in place for the duration of this event. We are conducting community outreach assessments for language support needs in Spanish, Amharic, Arabic and Farsi.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Please bring your whole family and join your neighbors for a day of African-centered advocacy & community building to make life better for all Alexandria children & families!

This is a community-led gathering to share ideas about what matters to us when it comes to our children, families, and neighborhoods thriving. Participants will be collaborating and problem solving in our eight community advocacy breakout groups (1) Pedestrian Safety [MOBILITY] (2) Sanitation, Health, and Community Upkeep, (3) Law Enforcement and Police Protection, (4) Recreation, (5) City Employment [WORK], (6) Housing, (7) Communication and (8) Education based on the civil rights areas included in the May 1968 Concerned Citizen's Network letter to the Alexandria City Council. ​

​As is PLTI tradition, the Alexandria People's Assembly will include a concurrent Children's Assembly, and introduce a Youth Assembly for older children. Our original CLTI facilitators Ms. Suzette Adams and Mrs. Kemba Cansler will lead our Children's Assembly. Mr. Marcus Sankofa Nicks, a historian, researcher, and veteran educator from Howard County MD Public Schools will lead our Youth Assembly. ​

FEATURED PRESENTERS

We are excited to welcome Dr. Linda James Myers, an internationally recognized thought leader, author, and scholar to share her theory/practice of Optimal Psychology aka Optimal Conceptual Theory with our assembly. Dr. Myers is Professor Emerita, the College of Arts and Sciences Department of African American and African Studies, and the College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at The Ohio State University. Dr. Myers’ work with the Alexandria People’s Assembly is supported by the Minority Behavioral Health Group in Akron, OH.

Dr. Kweli Zukeri a graduate of Howard University School of Psychology and facilitator with IKG Cultural Resource Center will speak to us about African architecture and symbolism in Alexandria, and the design of Washington DC as our nation's capital.
​Adrienne Fikes, PLTI executive director will invite you to begin the #16Greats family history and genealogy project that was the focus of her TEDxOronocoBayPark talk in 2019.
